Singapore’s Journey towards the Gold Medal | DirectAsia

The international sporting competition only comes every four years and it is always met with anticipation and excitement. It is a chance for countries to show to the whole world their best athletes. This year is a particularly historic time for the country because for the first time ever in Singapore’s sporting history, a Singaporean was able to win the top prize in an event.

Joseph Schooling, a 21 year old swimmer, is the first ever Singaporean to win a gold medal in the international sporting competition. Competing in the Men’s 100 metre butterfly event, he was able to beat out Michael Phelps (USA), Chad le Clos (South Africa), and László Cseh (Hungary) for the gold. Aside from the fact that he was able to beat out the competition, he was also able to set a new record of 50.39 seconds for the Men’s 100m butterfly event.

Not only was he able to beat his personal idol and multiple gold medallist, Michael Phelps, but he was also able to make his country extremely proud. Joseph Schooling’s achievement is something that Singaporeans, both young and old, will admire for many years to come. His road to Gold has certainly been very challenging and showed the world what Singaporeans can achieve with talent, passion, hard work, and determination.

From a young age, he was determined to train to be a swimming champion by training with the best albeit away from home. With the help and support of the people around him, he was able to focus on being the best swimmer he could be and, ultimately, achieve his dreams. He challenged and pushed his limits and the end result does not disappoint. Beating his childhood hero is definitely not an easy feat – Michael Phelps has won 23 gold medals. Joseph Schooling’s journey towards winning the Gold and legacy will definitely inspire future Singaporean athletes.
