What to do if the car is hit while parked - DirectAsia

title

One of the worst things for a car owner to encounter is to find their parked car damaged or scratched. This is especially frustrating and alarming when this happens to you for the first time. In this article, we will run through with you some of the things you should keep in mind if this happens to your vehicle.

1. Take Note Of The Time The Accident Occurred

If you have been away only for a short period of time, like half an hour so, this is fairly easy to record. However, if you have left your parked car for a day or for an extended period of time, this may be difficult to determine. One thing to do is to look around for witnesses and ask. Some parking lots are equipped with cameras. Enquire at the security office if the footage is available. This can help with the filing of the police report as well claiming your car insurance.

2. Check Out And Record The Damages

Look at the whole car and record the damages, for example, a dent on the rear door, or a scratch on the bumper. If your car has a dash cam that has the battery recording option with a sensor, it could record even if the car was parked and turned off.

3. Take Pictures

Take pictures of the damages and be as thorough as possible. Try to get close-up shots of the damages. Taking a video of the car will also make it easier for police and vehicle insurance companies to see the whole extent of the damage.

4. Report The Incident To The Police

Prior to making a claim, file the police report with the insurance company to prove that the damage was due to being hit by another car. A report can be filed online via the Singapore Police Force online portal.

5. Contact Your Insurance Provider

This should be done within 24 hours of the incident. Apart from filling up the claim form, provide all of the details including the photos and videos of the car. If the accident occurred outside Singapore, informing your insurer is still necessary. A comprehensive plan covers collision regardless of whose fault was it. Third party only (TPO) and third party fire and theft (TPFT) does not include hit-and-run coverage.

In recent years, hit-and-run cases have been falling in Singapore. With more and more motorists getting in-vehicle cameras, people are becoming more careful on the road. But keeping these tips in mind, you can be sure you can handle the situation if it arises.
