Digital Cameras Keeping an Eye on Singapore Drivers
Singapore Traffic Police recently installed and launched 20 new digital cameras at major locations along expressways and main arterial roads. The new cameras are aimed specifically at catching speeding drivers in the act.
And they’re quite effective.
The new digital cameras are a major step up from the old, film-based traffic cams. The new cameras give traffic police increased resolution, ability to take more pictures and will remain live 24 hours a day.
Digital eyes on Singapore drivers
These new road cameras are in addition to the 240 digital cameras already promised for June 2015. The 240 are aimed squarely at red light runners. Even though they’re only about half way through the installation, the red light cameras have already proven highly effective.
From March to September of 2014 the new cameras caught 40% MORE red light runners than in the entire 2013 calendar year!
Speeders beware
If the red light cameras are any indication, these new cameras aimed at catching speeders should show a dramatic increase in prosecuted speeders in coming months.
Fines for speeding:
- Exceeding 01 - 20km/h = $130 Fine + 4 Demerit Points.
- Exceeding 21 - 30km/h = $150 Fine + 6 Demerit Points.
- Exceeding 31 - 40km/h = $180 Fine + 8 Demerit Points.
- Exceeding 41 - 50km/h = more than $200 Fine + 12 Demerit Points + Court
- Exceeding 51 - 60km/h = more than $200 Fine + 18 Demerit Points + Court
- Exceeding More Than 61km/h = more than $200 Fine + 24 Demerit Points + Court.
Also, the penalty for running a red light is 12 demerit points and a fine of at least $200.
And you lose your no demerit points (up to 5%) discount on your car insurance!
Safe drivers need not worry
But if you’re already a safe driver these new cameras are welcome news. The increased prosecutions and fines will hopefully result in people driving more responsibly along our roads.
