Zero. It can mean nothing, or it can mean everything. Like zero traffic accidents. Think about it. No traffic accidents in Singapore? It may not concern you. Unless the accident affects you, or someone you love. Suddenly, it means everything.
Every day, every person, every vehicle makes the road in Singapore safer, or less safe. You’ll know what we mean, a driver that impulsively changes lanes without signaling, a truck that cuts across three lanes of traffic to make a tight turn. Someone speeding up to beat the red light. We’ve all seen this kind of behavior, and we have all probably witnessed the terrible accidents it causes.
So we are aiming for zero. On Sunday, 15 November 2015 at Singapore Expo Hall 3 launched the new Drive to Zero Accidents road safety campaign. A collaboration between DirectAsia.com, the Singapore Traffic police (TP) and Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC).
With Mr Amrin Amin, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs as the Guest-of-Honour we challenged and awarded drivers in Singapore.
DirectAsia’s Road Safety Campaign - Drive to Zero Accidents
This year’s campaign challenges all road users to adopt good road safety habits with the aim of zero traffic fatalities. To reinforce this, the “Drive to Zero” message will be screened from November 2015 to January 2016 at Golden Village Cinemas.
“Spot the Conscientious Motorists” Award
Sunday’s campaign launch saw 74 conscientious motorists being commended for their exemplary road safety behaviour. That means 600 drivers that have now been awarded since the launch of the “Spot the Conscientious Motorists” programme in October 2013. These motorists receive petrol and insurance vouchers sponsored by DirectAsia.com.
To be eligible for the award, a motorist has to be seen by our TP officers doing at least one of the following:
- Signaling early before switching lanes (not applicable to drivers who drive at high speeds and are constantly switching lanes)
- Giving way even when they have the right of way – especially to heavy vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists
- Keeping a safe distance,
- Not horning or high-beaming unnecessarily when annoyed by other road users,
- Keeping out of the fast lane when other lanes are not occupied,
- Giving way to emergency vehicles well in-advance
- Assisting stranded motorists/accident victims
Rewards for Safe Driving
